For anyone who wants to spray plaster often and is interested in the Wagner brand, the HeavyCoat series is a must!
These are electric or internal combustion engine-powered, hydraulically-operated airless machines that are highly reliable and powerful.

What is the HeavyCoat range?

This series includes airless pumps that operate hydraulically, giving them greater suction power than conventional piston machines.
What’s more, you’ll find that this HeavyCoat series is available in 2 versions, one called “E” = Electric and one called “G” = Gasoline, which means with a petrol engine (thermal).
The vast majority of Wagner HC users in Europe have the electric version. However, the internal combustion engine version of each HeavyCoat type (750, 950 or 970) will remain an advantage in remote locations, such as when covering an agricultural silo in a field.
So there’s something for everyone, whether in the city or the countryside.

What models are currently available?

When selecting a Wagner HeavyCoat machine, we need to start with the minimum model required. Not everyone needs the most powerful model, the HC 970, but in some cases it is necessary. It all depends on your activity and the thickest material you want to spray with it.
So you’ll find the existing models below, arranged in ascending order, from least to most powerful.

Wagner HeavyCoat HC 750

The HC 750 is Wagner’s entry-level hydraulic pump with the following features:

  • Motor power: 3.1 kW
  • Voltage: 230 V / 50 Hz
  • Max. working pressure: 250 bar
  • Maximum flow rate: 6 l/min
  • Maximum nozzle size: 0.043″ (543)

Next you will find the HC 950, which will be in the middle of the range and will be the first horizontal model:

  • Motor power: 3.6 kW
  • Voltage: 230 V / 50 Hz
  • Maximum working pressure: 250 bar
  • Maximum flow rate: 6.6 l/min
  • Maximum nozzle size: 0.052″ (552)

Wagner HeavyCoat HC 970

Finally the HC 970 is the most powerful model in the Wagner range, but also the heaviest:

  • Motor power: 5.5 kW
  • Voltage: 400 V / 50 Hz
  • Maximum flow rate: 10.3 l/min
  • Maximum nozzle size: 0.056″ (556)
  • Weight: 103 kg

So what questions should you ask yourself to help you decide which model to choose?

  • What type of project do you have?  Small (50m²) / Medium (150m²) or Large project (200m² and over)
  • What material/paint will be used? acrylic/oil/epoxy/plaster/varnish/latex/primer/acrylic/bitumen/resin
  • Approximately how many litres will you need for your project?
  • Frequency of use? 5< times/year – 1 time/month – every week
  • What type of spray?  Interior – interior/exterior – facade – floor only – roof only – silos – cellar

What series are available?

Once you know which model of HeavyCoat you need (750, 950 or 970), you still have to decide on two things. The first concerns the machine’s power supply. Can we connect to electricity or not? Can we get 400V for the HC 970 or not?
If so, you’ll need the “E” version of your HC model. If not, you might be better off with the petrol “G” version.
However, you can always buy the power supply you don’t have and install it on your HC machine. In fact, Wagner HC electric and petrol motors can easily and fairly quickly be removed and interchanged if necessary (with the exception of the HC 750, which is built as a single unit and cannot change its power supply).

E Series

As you can see, the “E” series will be the Wagner electric series, with 230V connection up to the HC 950 model, then 400V for the HC 970 models. The HeavyCoat 970 will therefore not be easy to plug in everywhere.

G Series

The “G” series will be the one with an internal combustion engine, so you can be independent of any electrical source. But that’s not all! It turns out that the combustion engine also transfers more energy to the airless pump than the electrical supply. As a result, the pump can develop more spray flow per minute than it could with electric power for the same model of machine.

Here is the difference in spray rate between the “E” and “G” series for each model:

  • HeavyCoat 750 : « E » = 6,0 l/min – « G » = 7,6 l/min
  • HeavyCoat 950 : « E » = 6,6 l/min – « G » = 8,0 l/min
  • HeavyCoat 970 : « E » = 10,3 l/min – « G » = 12,0 l/min

Once the model and power supply have been selected, the second question to ask is whether to go for the standard series or the SSP (Special Spray Power) block located at the bottom of the pump.

HeavyCoat series with or without SSP?

First of all, what is it?
SSP stands for “Special Spray Power”. You can read more about this in our blog article “Differences between the Wagner HeavyCoat E & E SSP sprayer versions“; but what you need to understand is that it enhances suction power and prevents clogging during suction thanks to its technology.

What are the main differences?

What are the main differences between these models of Wagner machine?

  1. Power – as always with airless technology, this is the point of greatest variation between models in a series and airless brand.
  2. Options – for example, the HC 750 will be lighter than its larger siblings, but its pump base will be fixed and not removable like the others. Or the HC 750 will have an automatic hydraulic function, but will not have a feed changeover like the others.

The best value for money

Let’s finish this blog article with a question you’ll probably be asking us over the phone: what’s the best value for money between these different Wagner models?

As is often the case with airless spraying, it’s better to get a more powerful machine than a less powerful one for your airless projects. But in this case, with the HeavyCoat range already at a certain price, the most powerful version, the HC 970, will not be easily affordable.

As far as we’re concerned, having tested these Wagner machines a number of times and having heard many customer reviews, we feel it’s safe to say that the HeavyCoat 950 E SSP is the best choice for the majority of our customers. Particularly those who want to spray fine, filling plasters and paints.

Why the Wagner HC 950 E SSP?

  1. This machine can deliver up to 6.6 litres of flow per minute. This makes it the first model powerful enough to handle the various fillers currently on the market without too much effort. Finer products will also pass through without difficulty.
  2. This is another Wagner hydraulic machine operating on 230V in its electric version. It can therefore be connected without difficulty to the majority of worksite installations in Europe.
  3. The SSP system is definitely an advantage for small, medium and large companies, to reduce the risk of interruption on worksites.
  4. This is the first HeavyCoat model with a removable 3-position pump bottom. This will come in handy for :
    1. Transport (prone position)
    2. Changing the material to be sprayed on site (oblique position)
    3. Connecting to a hopper or container (inclined position)
    4. Or ordinary suction using a bucket of plaster or paint (vertical position).
  5. The HC 950 will be the first HeavyCoat model to be able to change its power supply easily (E or G).
  6. It will be the last model to weigh less than 100 kg, at just ~84 kg.
  7. Finally, its cost will still be a very good mid-range price (with the SSP option on top) compared with other HeavyCoats and similar machines from other brands in airless hydraulics.
