Large surfaces can be painted very easily with an airless paint sprayer, but what about the small surfaces such as radiators, doors or window frames? Many painters have to face this problem during renovations in small apartments where a small amount of paint (1 to 5 liters) is required and it may not be the most efficient thing to do to use a “big” airless machine. So let’s see what the options are.

Wagner XVLP FineCoat 3500 and FineCoat 5000
First of all let’s remember what XVLP technology is. This is a further development of Wagner of the HVLP (High Volume Low Pressure) technology, which allows to spray at a lower pressure than a typical sprayer.
Wagner FineCoat 3500 XVLP
This XVLP sprayer the smallest model proposed by Wagner with its power of 700 W and its working pressure of 0.2 bar. It comes with a manual pistol weighing 2.3 Kg. The sprayer (motor included) is constructed in such a way that the user can easily hold it in one hand even with the paint inside it. For the top model FineCoat 5000, the motor is separated from the gun and the air is sucked through an air hose connecting the motor to the gun. This makes it even easier to work because the weight of the sprayer is in the hand is evel less. For the FC 3500, three attachments are available: one for stain, one for lacquer and one for dispersion paint.
Wagner FC 3500 in detail:
- weight and height: low (2.3 kg) but hard to use with the arm constantly stretched
- spray mist: low
- usability: easy to handle, lacquers must be adjusted accordingly before spraying even if some paints are ready to use with an XVLP gun
- cleaning: no difficulty for gun parts and bowl (the paint goes directly into the bowl without hose)
- quality: for simple applications, a lot of plastic parts which can limit or compel repairs in case of damage
- costs: low due to limited device performance
Wagner FC 5000 XVLP
This XVLP sprayer is a developmet of the FC 3500. The FineCoat 5000 delivers much better performance thanks to its 1400W motor power. The motor is separated from the gun and the air supply is possible thanks to a 5-meter-long hose. The main advantage is that the user only holds in his hand only the gun with the paint bowl and has less weight in the arm. The system (turbine included) weighs 8 kilos and is very compact and practical. Three attachments for stains, lacquers and dispersion paints are available.
Wagner FC 5000 for comparizon:
- weight and height: low with 8 kg
- spray mist: low
- usability: easy to handle, lacquers must be adjusted accordingly before spraying even if some paints are ready to use with an XVLP gun
- cleaning: no difficulty for gun parts and bowl (the paint goes directly into the bowl without hose)
- quality: for simple applications, a lot of plastic parts which can limit or compel repairs in case of damage
- costs: low to medium
Graco and Wagner HVLP sprayers
Graco offers three similar models, each with different performance levels: Graco TurboForce 7.0, TurboForce 9.0 and TurboForce 9.5. Soon the US manufacturer is expected to bring the new Graco TurboForce II Series devices to market.
In the same category, Wagner offers the FineCoat 9900 which combines the advantages of HVLP and XVLP technologies. By being compact and lightweight, the equipment is quickly cleaned and produces little spray mist because it works at very low pressure. This means that masking work is reduced to the bare minimum, an important advantage when it comes to saving the most time and money on a project. The only drawback is that the material has to be diluted to the desired consistency. However, there are already ready-to-use paints as well.
Graco TubroForce 7.0, 9.0 and 9.5
There are 3 HVLP pumps operating on different performance levels. The most popular model among painters is the TurboForce 9.0: it has a 4-stroke turbine that allows backpressure up to 0.6 bar. This paint station is equipped with a 9 meter long air hose to work remotely with the HVLP gun. The finishes are of high quality thanks to the metal gun.

- cleaning: fast (bowl + gun) as paint is only in the bowl
- quality: high quality, the gun is in metal, machine conceived to last long
- costs: comparatively high
