Latex paint, often referred to as waterborne paint, is very popular thanks to its many qualities. Used both indoors and outdoors, it is renowned for its flexibility and ease of application. This article will help you better understand the characteristics of latex paint and how to choose the right paint for your needs.
Characteristics of latex paint
Contrary to its name, latex paint no longer contains natural latex. It’s water-based, which makes it quick-drying and low in volatile organic compounds (VOCs). It is particularly suited to living areas such as bedrooms, living rooms and public spaces like offices and schools. Thanks to its water-based formula, it’s odorless, easy to clean and won’t yellow over time.
Key benefits include :
- Fast drying: You can apply several coats in a single day.
- Easy to clean: A damp cloth is all you need to remove stains.
- Ecological: Its low VOC content makes it more environmentally friendly.
- Durable finish: Resists impact, scratches and repeated cleaning.
Latex or acrylic paint?
Although latex paint and acrylic paint are often confused, they do have a few differences. Acrylic, although still water-based, contains acrylic resins that make it more resistant, especially outdoors. If you’re looking for a durable solution for surfaces like wood or metal, acrylic is a good choice, while latex paint is ideal for interior walls.
What surfaces can latex paint be used on?
Latex paint is versatile and can be applied to a wide range of surfaces, including :
- Interior walls (bedrooms, living rooms).
- Ceilings.
- Concrete and plaster.
It is less suitable for surfaces such as metal or unprepared wood, which require a more specific paint.
Preparation before applying latex paint
To achieve an impeccable finish, it is crucial to prepare the surface properly. Here are a few key steps:
- Clean the surface: It must be free of dust, grease and mould.
- Repair imperfections: Fill any cracks or holes before applying paint.
- Sand lightly to improve paint adhesion.
- Apply an undercoat to porous or dark surfaces to even out the finish.

Latex paint application
Latex paint is easy to apply, whether with a roller, brush or airless spray gun. For smooth, even results, we recommend using quality tools and respecting the drying time between coats.
Applying latex paint with an airless spray gun
Applying latex paint with an airless spray gun is particularly effective for achieving a smooth, even finish, especially on large surfaces. Here are the main steps and tips to follow for optimum use:
- Paint preparation: Dilute latex paint if necessary, following the manufacturer’s recommendations. This facilitates its passage through the airless spray gun.
- Gun adjustment: Choose a suitable nozzle (generally between 0.015 and 0.019 inches for latex paint) and adjust the pressure. Too much pressure may cause splattering, while too little pressure will result in uneven application.
- Application: Maintain a constant distance of 25-30 cm from the surface. Use even strokes, overlapping each pass by 50% to avoid streaking.
- Avoid overloading: Apply several thin coats rather than one thick one to avoid drips. Also remember not to pressurize your airless to its maximum capacity.

The main advantage of the airless spray gun is its speed and professional finish, ideal for large rooms, facades or ceilings. However, it is essential to protect surrounding surfaces and wear a mask to avoid splashing and inhalation. For this purpose, we offer plastic tapes and films.
Latex paint is a versatile, ecological and easy-to-maintain choice. It adapts to most interior surfaces and is easy to apply. If you’re looking for a practical paint for your renovation projects, latex paint is a reliable option to consider.
