We often hear people say that choosing a paint is difficult, or even: matt or satin, which paint should I choose? But with the right information, it’s child’s play. In this article, we explain what satin paint is and how to choose it.
Special features of satin paint
Satin paint is halfway between matt and gloss. It is shiny enough to reflect light and add softness to the room.
Satin paint is best used when painting a wall in several colours, because it works well with all kinds of patterns.
Here are its major advantages:
- Decorate every room in the house without being flashy
- Make the space luminous by reflecting light well
- Create a warm and welcoming atmosphere
- Add vitality to walls
- Easy to maintain
- Pleasant to the touch and to the eye thanks to its silky finish
Matt or Satin paint?
A recurring question is how to choose a type of paint. In general, the hesitation is centred on matt and satin paints. If you’re looking for a matt finish, but still want the ease of maintenance of a gloss paint, then satin is for you.
Play with materials by combining satin paint with matt paint. Satin paint is for the part of the room you want to highlight, such as mouldings and woodwork.
What rooms should I use satin paint for?
Unlike matt paint, satin paint can be washed and sometimes washed off, and it’s not afraid of being used in very busy places. It’s impact-resistant, and not afraid of water or stains of any kind.
So it’s ideal for damp rooms (bathrooms and kitchens) and high-traffic areas (entrances, corridors and even children’s bedrooms).
Preparing the substrate before applying satin paint
Unlike matt, satin paint requires thorough preparation: imperfections are not allowed, as this material will highlight the slightest flaws in the painted surface. The surface must be sound, dry and clean before application. Remove any stains or holes by scraping, filling and washing the surface.
If you are applying your satin paint to a surface that has already been painted, wash it thoroughly. This will remove any traces of grease or mould on the wall.
To make sure you don’t make any mistakes, here are the preparation steps for applying satin paint:
- Clean the surface thoroughly, removing all traces of old paint.
- Sand down any irregularities and fill any existing holes and cracks to obtain a perfectly smooth surface
- Remove dust with a sponge or damp cloth
- Apply a primer or undercoat
- Allow to dry
- Apply your satin paint
Airless spray application
Satin paint is best applied with a roller in a single coat to avoid any problems during drying.
Did you know that there is a self-powered airless roller made by Wagner? It works just like a lambda paint roller, except that the paint reaches the roller without refilling and it produces absolutely no spray mist. It also connects directly to any airless pump.
Here’s a video demonstration of this airless roller and our full test here.
We hope this article will provide you with plenty of information on how to choose the right satin paint for your painting job.
