In the following blog post, we take a closer look at the new Graco Xtreme Torque engines. These motors are fitted to the current Ultra XT and Mark XT models and offer a number of advantages over conventional motors. First, we’ll take a look at the technical features of the engines and their effect on operation. Then we’ll take a look at pressure adjustment and control. Finally, we summarise all the advantages of the new Xtreme Torque engines and give an overview of Graco sprayers equipped with these new engines.

Graco Xtreme Torque engine

Xtreme Torque translates as ‘extreme torque’. In this case, it’s no exaggeration, as the engines in the new Graco Ultra XT and Mark XT models have around 15 times more torque than a comparable standard engine. This is necessary because the engine now directly drives the piston pump of the spray-painting machine. This reduces engine speed by 90%. As a result, the engine runs more slowly and much more quietly. According to Graco, engine noise has been reduced by a factor of 10. Engine load and wear are also reduced. This performance is achieved by using 8 times more magnets in the motor.

The Xtreme Torque motor technology was developed by Graco, offering the first motor with features specially adapted to the requirements of an airless device.

Effects of the Xtreme Torque motor on pressure control

The pressure drop between dynamic pressure and spraying pressure is also much lower. So are pressure variations during spraying. This reduction in pressure variations means that the spray pattern is more even and the paint is sprayed more uniformly over the surface. The result is a better quality surface.

How does this happen? More pressure means more paint is pushed through the nozzle and applied to the surface. With less pressure, less paint passes through the nozzle and onto the wall. The pressure drop between dynamic pressure and spray pressure, when the gun is pulled, can quickly reach 20 bar or more. Pressure variations while working with the gun withdrawn can also reach a few bars, which adversely affects the uniformity of paint application.

Thanks to what Graco calls RapidResponse Control, i.e. the new motor technology and pressure control, these problems are now significantly reduced.

Effects of the Xtreme Torque motor on pressure adjustment

The new motor technology also has a positive effect on the pressure setting and control of the Ultra XT and Mark XT series airless machines. Pressure can now be set much more precisely to achieve the desired number of bars. On previous and competitor models, it is generally not easy to set the desired number of bars precisely. Most of the time, the pressure setting reacts imprecisely and you soon find yourself 10 bars or more above the desired value. The pressure then has to be released via the relief valve and the pressure setting has to be repeated. You might think that these few bars don’t matter. But when it comes to optimising the spray pattern and reducing the formation of paint mist, a few bars make all the difference.
