We have received an inquiry about a two-headed lance for spraying paint. What actually is a two-headed lance? And what is the purpose of such a spray extension? What are the advantages of such a lance and what are the disadvantages? And finally, we test the two-headed lance to see if it is really worth using.

What is a two-headed lance?
A two-headed lance works like a classic spray lance, except that the lance splits forward and two nozzles can then be used in parallel. In the model that we have here for testing, the second nozzle is slightly lower. This prevents the two nozzles from hitting each other and causing turbulence.

What are the advantages of using a two-headed lance?
Using two nozzles side by side creates a spray jet that is twice as wide. According to the manufacturer, twice as much wall surface can be coated with each pull. The use of the two-headed lance thus enables large wall surfaces to be coated more quickly compared to classic work with the airless unit.

How to mount the two-headed lance?
Unscrew the nozzle holder with nozzle from your gun. Make sure that the nozzle seal does not fall out. Then screw the two-headed lance onto the gun. Mount the nozzle holder with nozzle on the front of the lance. In addition, a second nozzle holder with nozzle is required for the second head of the lance. You should make sure to use two identical nozzles. For example, two nozzles in size 517 to apply the paint evenly to the surface.

How to spray with the two-headed airless lance?
Work with the two-headed lance is the same as with any other airless lance. Due to the wider spray jet, only the control and guidance of the lance and the overlapping of the spray jet need to be taken into account.

Conclusion on the two-headed lance
The spray test showed that the two-headed spray lance is more suitable for large areas, such as in underground garages. In normal apartments or single-family homes, there are always interruptions to the surface due to windows or doors. Here, a nozzle with a 50 degree angle and a spray width of approximately 25 cm on the surface is more suitable.
In large objects, the area output can be increased, but there are also some disadvantages associated with the use of the two-headed lance. When using the two-headed lance, two nozzles are used at the same time, which requires significantly more power from the sprayer. The lance is therefore not for smaller paint sprayers. In the test, we used a Graco Mark VII with two Graco LP nozzles in 517.

The weight of the lance and the two nozzle holders and nozzles is a small drawback, but it does not seem too heavy since the lance is made of aluminum. In the test, it was also noticed that the lance tends to spit more than usual. Here you can counteract by the right working technique. These spits would be well avoided with the Graco CleanShot valve (anti-spit valve). However, two anti-spit valves would also have to be mounted on the two-headed lance. Besides the high cost of two CleanShot valves, the additional weight speaks against it.

In addition, a stronger overspray formation was visible in the test with the two-headed lance. For us, the disadvantages of a two-headed lance outweigh the advantages, which is why we do not carry these lances in our range. If a very wide spray jet is really needed, wide-angle nozzles are less complicated and less expensive to use. These are nozzles with a particularly wide jet. The use of these nozzles can also significantly increase the area output, but they also tend to produce more paint mist. Wide-angle nozzles up to 120 degrees and a jet width of about 60 cm on the surface are available.
