Nothing is more frustrating than preparing a job, getting all your gear ready, and finding at the critical moment that your airless sprayer refuses to start. Before panicking or sending your machine to the after-sales service, know that most start-up failures come from simple causes that are easy to identify and fix.

Here is a complete guide to the 11 reasons why your airless pump won’t start — and how to fix each one.
1. The power switch is not turned on
This may seem obvious, but it is one of the most common causes! In the rush of a job, it is easy to forget to flip the switch to the “ON” position. Always check this first before looking for a more complex fault.
2. No power at the electrical outlet
The problem does not always come from the machine itself. It can happen that the outlet the airless sprayer is plugged into is no longer delivering power (a tripped circuit breaker on the job site, a defective outlet).
- Solution:
- Plug another device (such as a work lamp or a drill) into the same outlet to check if power is flowing.
- Plug the machine into a different electrical outlet.

3. The pressure regulator is set to minimum
On piston machines, the motor only starts when the machine detects a need to build up pressure. If the pressure regulator dial is turned to the minimum, the machine considers that no effort is required and will not start.
- Solution: Slowly turn the pressure regulator up to increase the demand and trigger the motor to start.

4. An unsuitable extension cord
Airless pumps are very sensitive to the quality of their electrical supply. If you use an extension cord that is too long or whose wire gauge (cross-section) is too thin, this creates a voltage drop. The energy reaching the machine is insufficient to start the motor.
- Solution: Remove the extension cord and test the machine plugged directly into the wall. If you absolutely must use an extension cord, invest in a suitable cable (generally a 3 × 2.5 mm² cross-section for a maximum length of 20 to 30 metres).
Why this point is so critical for airless sprayers:
- The voltage drop phenomenon: Airless sprayer motors demand a very high inrush current at start-up and during pressure-building phases. If the extension cord is too long or the internal wires are too thin (like standard household cords at 1.5 mm²), the cable creates high electrical resistance. The result: current loses power along the way and does not arrive at the machine at 230 V.
- The machine’s electronic protection: Faced with too low a voltage, the airless sprayer does not have the energy needed to drive the piston. Modern machines will then enter a safety mode and refuse to start (on Graco machines, this often shows as error code E08, signalling insufficient voltage).
- Risk of damage: If the machine tries to compensate for the lack of current, or if it has no automatic cut-off, the motor will strain and overheat, which can burn out the main circuit board — an extremely expensive part to replace.
🔑 The Golden Rule for Powering an Airless Sprayer
- Direct connection: Always prefer plugging directly into a wall outlet.
- Beware of the coil effect: Always fully unroll the extension cord from its reel before switching the machine on, even if the outlet is only 3 metres away. A cord still coiled on itself creates a magnetic field that causes the cable to overheat and can melt it.

5. The motor or lower pump is seized
If the motor tries to start but cannot, there is likely a mechanical blockage. On machines with digital displays, an error code may appear to guide you. This blockage often occurs in the lower pump section (the piston is jammed). Never force the machine in this condition, as you risk burning out the motor (one of the two most expensive parts).

6. The machine is overheating
Your airless sprayer is equipped with a thermal safety cut-off. If it has been left in direct sunlight in summer, or if you have used a small model for a job that is far too large (intensive use without breaks), the machine will shut off to protect the motor.
- Solution: Move the machine into the shade, let it cool down for 30 to 60 minutes, then try restarting it.

7. The last cleaning was neglected or forgotten
This is every painter’s nightmare: a partial (or non-existent) cleaning at the end of the previous day. The paint has dried inside the circuit or in the lower pump, literally sealing the piston. The machine then cannot start.
- Solution: A full manual disassembly and thorough cleaning of the lower pump and check valves with the appropriate solvent will be necessary.
8. Using an unsuitable product
Not all airless pumps can spray everything. Two scenarios frequently block the machine:
- Using filler/render in a pump designed exclusively for paints. The product is too heavy, clogs the circuit and blocks the mechanism.
- Using two-component (2K) paint with cleaning left too late. If the paint starts to harden (catalyse) inside a machine that lacks the power to push it out, the circuit seizes up.

9. Short circuit on the electronic board
Power fluctuations are the enemy of your airless sprayer’s electronic board. A sudden power surge or the use of a poorly regulated generator (unstable alternating current) can cause a short circuit and burn out the main board. In this case, the machine shows no signs of life at all and replacement of the part by a professional is required.

10. The power cable is damaged
On job sites, cables take a beating: stepped on, crushed by doors or ladders. If the power cable of your airless sprayer is cut, stripped or internally damaged inside its sheath, power will not reach the motor.
11. Carbon brushes are worn or an internal fuse has blown
If you have checked all of the above points, the problem may come from the internal consumables inside the motor.
- On brushed motors (universal motors or older models), the carbon brushes wear down over time. When they are too short, electrical contact is no longer made and the motor will not start.
- Similarly, some machine models have an internal protection fuse. If it has blown due to a minor power surge, the machine will not turn on.
