Graco WRLP nozzles – wide jet with less mist

Graco WRLP nozzles provide a 60 cm wide spray jet with reduced paint mist formation. These nozzles are particularly interesting for large surface projects, as they significantly increase the output per square metre. A much larger wall surface can be painted with each pass.
In what follows, we’ll take a closer look at which projects and paints WRLP nozzles are best suited to. Finally, we’ll discuss the nozzle sizes available and what to look out for when choosing the right nozzle.

Graco WRLP nozzle – What is it?

(A particularly wide spray pattern and little paint mist: these are the promises made by Graco for its fluorescent-coloured WRLP nozzles.
WR stands for Wide RAC. LP stands for Low Pressure. LP technology allows paint to be sprayed at a lower pressure setting than standard nozzles. This low-pressure technique was successfully introduced to the market several years ago, as were wide-angle nozzles. What’s new is the combination of these two features (wide jet & low pressure).

What sizes of Graco WRLP nozzles are available?

Graco WRLP nozzles are available in seven different sizes. The jet width is always 120 degrees and the nozzle orifices are selectable from 0.021″ to 0.033″.

What is the spray width of a Graco WRLP nozzle?

The jet of all WRLP nozzles is 120 degrees. If the distance between the surface and the nozzle is correct, the width of the jet on the wall should be approximately 60 cm.

Graco WRLP nozzle – Spray width comparison

To spray interior wall paint on walls, nozzles with a spray width of 40, 50 or 60 degrees are generally used. The jet width on the wall with these nozzles is around 20, 25 and 30 cm. WRLP nozzles can therefore achieve a much higher surface output, since twice as much wall surface or more can be painted with each pass.

What do I need to consider when choosing the right size of WRLP nozzle?

As the jet of WRLP nozzles is considerably wider, the nozzle orifice must also be chosen to be larger than that of narrow jet nozzles. The nozzle orifice determines how much material is pushed through the nozzle per minute. If we take a 521 nozzle and a 1221 nozzle, the width of the jet is very different. However, the bore is identical and so is the amount of material pushed through the nozzle per minute. Nozzle 521 has a jet width of around 25 cm on the wall. Nozzle 1221, on the other hand, projects a jet approximately 60 cm wide onto the surface. The same amount of material is therefore spread over a jet width of 25 cm for nozzle 521 and a jet width of 60 cm for nozzle 1221. With the 1221 nozzle, the amount of paint applied to the surface is significantly less

If you are normally happy with the 521 nozzle, but require a wider spray pattern, it is not advisable to choose a 1221 nozzle. Instead, the nozzle orifice should be chosen to be larger than the spray width in order to apply the same amount of material. Here are some recommendations: if you normally use a 517 nozzle, a 1221 nozzle will deliver roughly the same amount of product with a wider spray pattern. With a 517 nozzle, a 1223 or 1225 could apply a comparable amount of material to the wall.

Here are a few more examples:

  • 515 = 1221
  • 517 = 1223 ou 1225
  • 519 = 1227
  • 521 = 1229
  • 523 = 1231 ou 1233

For which materials and projects are Graco WRLP nozzles suitable?

WRLP wide-angle nozzles are particularly well suited to large, uninterrupted areas. This includes underground car parks, unfinished buildings, warehouses, agricultural stables, large offices and commercial areas. Wherever square metres need to be created, the use of WRLP nozzles can be cost-effective.
However, the area should not be too tortuous and there should not be too many interruptions due to windows or doors, for example.

WRLP nozzles are mainly designed for wall paints and primers. For simpler qualities such as DIN products, a spray test should be carried out beforehand. Material components that are too coarse, as in many white DIN products, can cause problems when applied with all LP Graco nozzles.

What are the advantages of using WRLP nozzles over standard nozzles?

Firstly, the fluorescent-coloured WRLP nozzles offer a much wider spray pattern and therefore a higher output per square metre than conventional nozzles. Thanks to LP technology, the material can be sprayed at reduced pressure. The result is less paint mist, less masking work and less paint wastage. Lastly, the airless equipment is subjected to less stress at lower pressure, which increases its lifespan. Wear and tear on the airless nozzles is also reduced at lower pressure, which extends their service life.

Standard wide-angle nozzles from Graco and Wagner

In addition to WRLP nozzles, Wagner and Graco also offer standard wide-angle nozzles. These nozzles also have a wide spray pattern, but cannot be sprayed at reduced working pressure. With these nozzles, you can therefore expect more paint mist to form.
