What is an Wagner AirCoat spray gun and how does it work?

The AirCoat spraying process is an air-assisted high pressure spraying system. The paint sprayer generates the pressure. The material is conveyed to the gun via a high pressure hose. In addition, compressed air is conveyed from a compressor via a second hose to the Wagner AirCoat spray gun and ensures a fine atomization of the spray material.

The AirCoat gun trigger is pressed to apply the spray material onto the surface. The spray jet can be adjusted with a set screw. The AirCoat air cap ensures optimum airflow and the AirCoat nozzle ensures the desired atomization of the paint or glaze. A filter in the gun protects the nozzle from contamination in the spray material and prevents blockages.

Detailed information on the AirCoat spraying process is summarized in the article AirCoat spraying At A Glance.

Thread on Wagner AirCoat spray guns

AirCoat spray guns have two connection threads. One thread for connecting the paint hose and a second thread for the air hose. For a long time it was common practice to use two different threads to avoid interchanging both hoses.

In this case, the paint connection was equipped with a M16x1.5 thread and the connection for the air hose with a smaller 1/4″ thread.

Increasingly, AirCoat units are also supplied with a 1/4″ thread on the paint- and air hose. Make sure that the hoses are connected correctly. Otherwise paint or other materials can get into the air hose and cause it to stop functioning.

Spray lance for Wagner AirCoat spray gun

For spray guns like the Wagner AC 4600, a spray lance in 30 cm length is also available. In this way, angled and difficult to access areas can be better coated.

Cleaning Wagner AirCoat spray guns

After your work is done, the AirCoat gun should be rinsed and cleaned just like the sprayer. For this, the paint channel is rinsed and water or solvent is pumped through the gun. The filter should be removed and cleaned.

At regular intervals, the gun filter should be completely replaced. The nozzle should also be cleaned and protected against residual material buildup.
