# hvlp gun

In the wonderful world of spraying materials, there are many professional methods and techniques.

One of these techniques is ultra low pressure spraying with an HVLP gun. In this article we will see all the essential information about this subject

What is an HVLP gun?

High volume low pressure (HVLP) spray guns are similar to conventional paint guns in that they use a compressor to circulate air through the gun. But unlike conventional spray guns, HVLP guns deliver a larger volume of air at a much lower pressure.

HVLP guns dispense lacquers and paints at a high volume and low pressure, resulting in minimal overspray and, when used properly, a finer finish. They are generally the tools of choice for cabinetmakers and woodworkers.

There are two types of HVLP gun systems:

  • A specialized system uses a turbine to atomize the finish. These systems are small and portable, but can be quite expensive.
  • A conversion system converts high-pressure air from a compressor to a lower pressure to create a lower volume and more controlled spray.

In general, the HVLP gun is typically made up as follows:

The paint tank is usually quite small (more or less one liter), so the hvlp gun is only used for certain applications.

How does it differ from other spray guns?

Conventional paint sprayers use compressed air to create high pressures that spray the finish onto a surface. The paint is finely atomized by the pressure, resulting in smooth, even coverage.

While the finish is excellent, conventional sprayers “waste” a lot of paint since some of the paint can end up spraying into the air, especially if you don’t use the right working pressure or settings on your machine.

HVLP stands for high-volume, low-pressure. A large volume of air is used to propel the paint at relatively low pressures. The low pressure limits bounce, so the paint adheres better to the surface you’re painting, which limits waste.

For which jobs should I use an HVLP gun?

HVLP spray guns dispense high-volume, low-pressure (HVLP) finishing products, reducing misting and, when used properly, producing a finer finish. Cabinetmakers and furniture makers love them.

Because of the low flow rate and limited pumping capacity of the cup, which must be refilled frequently, an HVLP gun is primarily used for small parts to be painted, such as doors, shutters, baseboards and fences.

Since the pressure available determines the viscosity of the materials that can be sprayed, it is clear that this type of low-pressure station can only spray varnishes, glazes, lacquers and very fluid paints. Therefore, you cannot use them for work with wall paint.
