Can you spray plaster with a diaphragm pump? Well, in theory there are some relatively inexpensive diaphragm pumps with enough performance on the market (eg FARBMAX Airless M10) that are significantly cheaper than piston pumps, like the Graco Mark VII, with comparative values in terms of liters per minute.

With regard to this, we received today a request from one of our customers:

Good morning, I have a question, I have seen your FARBMAX M10 Plus, it looks like a very powerful pump, can you spray plaster with it? Best regards, XXX

The question is a legitimate one, considering that if you look at the pure performance data, there is little difference between two sprayers like the FARBMAX M10 Plus and a pump like the Graco Mark VII: the FARBMAX M10 Plus, with 8.5 liters per minute, looks even more powerful than the Mark VII, whose delivery rate is slightly less, 6.0 l/min. One other element is key here: the FARBMAX M10 is a diaphragm pump, the Mark VII a piston pump. So the performance data alone does not help here because there are significant technical differences between these two types of pumps. Piston pumps are much better suited for the application of highly viscous materials such as plaster, fire protection paint or bitumen and are able to spray these very thick materials without problems. Here, diaphragm pumps reach their limits despite their high flow rate.

Diaphragm pumps can be used for glazes, paints, primers, wall and façade paints or roof coating. But with thicker materials diaphragm pumps clearly show their limits. For plaster, therefore, always use a piston pump such as the Graco Mark VII or comparative models.
