What are the steps to check when your machine doesn’t seem to be able to increase in pressure or when it is very unstable? That’s what we’re going to look at in today’s article. However, we must differentiate between piston machines and diaphragm machines.

Pressure problem - piston & diaphragm pumps

Overview of the different pressure problems

What are the areas of the machine where the most recurrent problems will appear for this type of failure on piston and diaphragm machines?

Here are the different zones in ascending order:

  • Fittings area
  • Suction area
  • Outlet area
  • Seals
  • Pressure regulator (potentiometer)

The first steps to check are as follows:

  • Observe if there is a leak at any point
  • Check that the fittings are properly screwed on
  • Unscrew the bottom conical part and check the large ball, its support and its cage
  • Tap the top part with a rubber hammer or can to release the small ball, or unscrew and check it
  • Unscrew and check the relief valve (check that the spring and the ball are working properly)
  • Problem with a pump seal (use the assembly drawing with the exploded view and the references)
  • Problem with the pressure regulator (the pressure sensor inside or the regulator itself)

Pressure problem on membrane machine

The first steps to check are as follows:

  • Observe if there is a leak at any point
  • Check that the fittings are properly screwed on
  • Unscrew and check the inlet valve (see if it leaks)
  • Unscrew and check the discharge valve (check that the spring and ball are working properly)
  • Problem with a pump seal (use the assembly drawing with the exploded view and the references)
  • Problem with the diaphragm (deformed, cracked…)
  • Problem with the pressure regulator
